1. Kobe Bryant’s helicopter pilot got special clearance from the Burbank Airport control tower to fly in thick fog on Sunday. The clearance came despite the fact that Los Angeles police grounded their own choppers due to bad visibility. Bryant, his 13-year-old daughter and seven other people died when the helicopter crashed. (CNN)
2. David Roux, who grew up in Lewiston, Maine, graduated from Harvard University and built a fortune as a Silicon Valley investor is donating $100 million to Northeastern University to establish a graduate school and research center in Portland. The goal is to make Portland a technology hub. (WGME)
3. Maine is taking precautions to ensure it’s ready for an outbreak of the coronavirus. The deadly disease has already killed more than 100 in China, and five are believed to be infected in the United States. 4. The New England Patriots may not be playing in the Super Bowl on Sunday, but Kennebunk’s Don Crisman will still be there. The 83-year-old Crisman has attended every Super Bowl as a fan – one of three people who can claim that.
