1. Seattle Mayor Jenny Durkan said the city will move to wind down the ongoing “Capitol Hill Occupied Protest” site that took over blocks of streets weeks ago. Durkan said that violence at the site has distracted from the message of the protesters. The mayor said police will soon move back into the precinct building they’d largely abandoned in the area. She also vowed to address some of the protester’s demands.
2. A noose was found in the garage stall of NASCAR’s only full-time black driver, Bubba Wallace, on Sunday. On Monday at Talladega Speedway, every other driver pushed Wallace’s car down pit road in a show of solidarity. Workers also painted “#IStandWithBubbaWallace” on the Talladega infield. NASCAR and several law-enforcement agencies are investigating who was responsible for the noose.
3. Governor Janet Mills postponed the reopening of bars for indoor service Monday. Bars were scheduled to reopen for indoor service on July 1. The Maine CDC says that indoor service at bars typically involves crowded spaces and people less likely to wear face coverings, leading to a higher risk of COVID-19 transmission.
4. Bowdoin College announced Monday it has canceled its fall varsity athletics season and halted all athletic competitions until Jan. 1 because it is keeping the vast majority of students off campus. The school is still hopeful winter sports will be able to resume after Jan. 1, which would allow teams, including the highly successful women’s basketball program, to compete its regular conference schedule.
5. Karen is among the least popular baby names on BabyNames.com. This is due in part to the nickname “Karen” that’s been assigned to privileged white women caught berating people on camera. The name Karen has seen a 75 percent decrease in popularity on BabyNames.com over the past decade.
