1. The United States has surpassed 3.1 million coronavirus cases with over 133,000 deaths. The Maine CDC reported one new coronavirus-related death and 26 new cases on Thursday bringing the statewide death toll to 111 with 474 active cases.
2. Thursday, Senator Susan Collins tried to distance herself from Trump administration threats to withhold funding from schools that don’t open. Collins said. “I think we need more funding, not threats to withhold funding.”
3. Sappi North America in Westbrook and Pixelle Specialty Solutions in Jay, two of Maine’s remaining paper mills, announced Thursday they will shut down major parts of their operations and lay off more than 130 workers.
4. Former Republican Gov. Paul LePage, who moved to Florida to enjoy warm weather and lower taxes after leaving office, has reestablished his residency in Maine. LePage posted on Facebook showing that he’d replaced the Florida plates on his car with Maine license plates.
5. Lisbon town leaders are hoping to attract more foot traffic with a new creation called “Moxie Plaza”, a closed down section of Main Street. Biz owners say this outdoor dining area and vendor location is aiming to bring some of the magic of #Moxiefest to Lisbon, since the festival was cancelled this year.
