2. The U.S. tops 5.2 million coronavirus cases w/ over 167,000 deaths. The Maine CDC reported no new deaths and 19 new cases on Thursday. Maine’s coronavirus-related death toll is 126 with 371 active cases. (WMTW)
3. Massabesic school district is the first in southern Maine to say it’s going to offer full-time classes this fall, all seven schools, five days a week. Students, and their parents have two options: go to school full time or continue remote learning from home. (WGME)
4. The University of Maine System said Thursday that it’s canceled its customary fall break around Indigenous Peoples’ Day and the weeklong spring break that typically happens in March. Without those breaks, according to the university system, there’s a smaller chance students will travel outside of Maine and return to campus, potentially infected with COVID-19. (BANGOR DAILY NEWS)
5. The Good Humor ice cream company decided to replace it’s long-used jingle “Turkey in the Straw.” The song had been used in minstrel shows and had racist origins. They turned to Wu-Tang Clan rapper RZA to write them a new one. The jingle will be made available to all the company’s trucks in the U.S. later this month. (CONSEQUENCE OF SOUND)
