1. President Trump and other speakers emphasized that no one would be safe in a Joe Biden America, on the last night of the RNC. The former reality tv show host attacked Biden directly, saying he’d be the “destroyer of America’s greatness.” He spoke to a group of over 1,000 people on the White House lawn. Very few were wearing a mask and social distancing did not seem to be observed. At the conclusion fireworks exploded over the Washington monument. (AP)
2. NBA players have decided to resume the playoffs after boycotting games in response to the Jacob Blake shooting. LeBron James was said to initially oppose returning to the court, but apparently had a change of heart. Bucks players reportedly spent significant time on the phone with Wisconsin Lieutenant Governor Mandela Barnes, which then led to Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers calling a special session of the State Legislature and urging lawmakers to vote on a package that includes police reform.(CBS SPORTS)
3. The U.S. tops 5.8 million coronavirus cases with over 180,000 related deaths. The Maine CDC reported one new death and 21 new cases on Wednesday. Maine’s death toll is 132 w/ 453 active cases. (WMTW)
4. The state has suspended the business license of the Big Moose Inn in Millinocket. The inn hosted a wedding reception on August 7, which has now been linked to 87 COVID-19 cases across the state. Maine DHHS has since returned to the inn and found there were continued deficiencies. (NEWS CENTER)
5. The Maine Principals’ Association on Thursday unanimously gave the OK for high school sports in the fall. The state will now review the MPA’s plan. Local school districts can also make their own decisions about whether to have fall sports. (WMTW)
