1. Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham introduced a nationwide abortion ban Tuesday. Graham’s bill would prohibit the procedure after 15 weeks of pregnancy, and has almost no chance of becoming law in the Democratic-held Congress.
2. Gov. Janet Mills, former Gov. Paul LePage and independent candidate Sam Hunkler will appear on stage in at least one debate before the November election. The three candidates have agreed to participate in an Oct. 4 debate in Lewiston at the Franco Center.
3. The Portland Water District did not detect the presence of the monkeypox virus in wastewater samples collected early this month, the district reported. Maine has recorded a total of 10 monkeypox cases this year.
4. Hundreds of schools across Maine still have a lot of job openings. The Lewiston School Committee approved pay raises for substitute teachers, edtechs and cafeteria workers. Substitute teacher pay went from $104 a day to $125. Substitute edtech pay went from $93 to $112 a day, and cafeteria workers now make $16 an hour.
5. City officials broke ground on a new skate park in South Portland Tuesday. The park will include half pipes, quarter pipes and more. Most of the money for the park was raised with donations and grants.
