1. Patagonia founder and Lewiston native Yvon Chouinard announced Wednesday that he is giving away the outdoor-apparel company. Instead of going public or passing his company ownership along to family, Chouinard will ensure that all Patagonia profits go toward combating climate change through non-profits and trusts. The company estimates that this will generate $100 million in charitable contributions.
2. The Gorham School Board voted to allow the poster “Gender 101” to stay in a 6th grade health classroom. RSU 9 in Farmington heard from dozens in the community Tuesday night on the same “Gender 101” poster. But no decision was made.
3. Amtrak says The Downeaster would not be impacted if there is a freight railroad strike. Early Thursday, the White House announced a tentative deal had been reached to avoid a strike. Amtrak Wednesday did cancel all long-distance trains starting on Thursday.
4. Shawnee Peak is no more. The ski resort is bringing back its original name, Pleasant Mountain. Aside from the name change, the resort also unveiled its new website and logo.
5. The Portland Sea Dogs are officially headed to the playoffs for the first time since 2014. Game 1 of the Northeast Division Championship Series will be played at Hadlock on Tuesday.
