- President Biden delivered his second State of the Union Address Tuesday night.The president focused largely on American manufacturing and jobs. Later in his speech, Biden called for a ban on assault weapons. He also urged Congress to pass a minimum 20% tax for billionaires. Singling out some unnamed Republicans, contending they are looking to slash and sunset Medicare and Social Security. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene jumped to her feet and yelled back “Liar!” (JN)
- Portland’s eighth graders will get the high school of their choice. An equal number picked either Portland or Deering, avoiding the need for reassignment to balance enrollments under a new school choice policy. (PH)
- Loyal Companion, a pet store chain, with 8 locations in Maine will be closing their doors at the end of February after filing for bankruptcy. Rumor has it the Saco location was purchased by another company and will remain open. (PH)
5. The now-former owners of the Portland Sea Dogs, the Burke family, have shared their profits from the sale of the team with 18 staff members.
