1. The Gulf Cartel has issued an apology for the four Americans who were kidnapped last week in Mexico. The apology included a photo of cartel members bound and in a face-down position as punishment for violating the cartel’s code of “respecting the life and well-being of the innocent.” The men were turned over to authorities. 2. An Augusta man was arrested Wednesday for allegedly plotting with an undercover FBI Agent to commit murder in Manhattan. Hyunkook Korsiak (CORE-C-ACK) allegedly agreed to murder a fictitious businessman for $50,000. Korsiak had four firearms, a latex mask, and a tactical vest at the time of arrest. (WMTW)
3. The influx of asylum seekers in Portland means many children are forced to wait weeks to be enrolled in school. Just from Sept. to the end of Jan. 612 multilingual students were enrolled. All of last year the number was 496. (PH)
4. Bowdoin College introduced Safa Zaki as its first-ever female president and its 16th president overall in its 229-year history on Thursday. Zaki was born in Egypt and lived in numerous other countries before coming to the U.S. to earn her master’s and doctorate in psychology at Arizona State. (WMTW)
