1. Kyle Fitzsimons, the most seriously charged and convicted January 6th Capitol rioter from Maine, will learn how many years he’ll spend in prison today. Fitzsimons is scheduled to be sentenced at 2:00 p.m. (WMTW)
2. A bill to expand gender-affirming care to teens is now signed into law. The new law will ensure 16- and 17-year-olds have access to hormone therapy without parental consent under certain conditions, like if they’re diagnosed with gender dysphoria, or are experiencing harm and have received counseling. 3. The National Weather Service is set to issue heat alerts for more than 86 million people. Record-breaking temps expected from California to Florida through the week and weekend. The hottest US spots will be in the southwest. Phoenix, Arizona is already on a run of 110-degree days while California’s Death Valley could reach temps of 125 to 130 degrees. The month is already on track to be the hottest July ever in recorded history. (Axios)
4. A proposal to hold a statewide referendum on whether to restore Maine’s original flag took a step forward this week. A committee voted to release a hold on the bill, after determining that no additional funding would be needed to put the question on the ballot this fall. The bill still needs a final vote in the Senate before heading to Gov. Janet Mills. The governor has not yet taken a position on the bill. (PH)
