1. Several new reproductive rights laws, passed by the Maine State Legislature this year, are going into effect. Starting today it will be legal in Maine to terminate a pregnancy after 24 weeks, but only when a doctor deems an abortion medically necessary. Another new law prohibits insurers from dropping malpractice coverage for abortion providers who treat women from other states where abortion is more restricted or banned. (WMTW)
2. Dozens of U.S. states, including Maine, are suing Meta for harming young people’s mental health by knowingly designing features on Instagram and Facebook that addict children to its platforms. The lawsuit also claims that Meta routinely collects data on children under 13 without their parents’ consent. (PH)
3. A Bangor man will spend 10 years behind bars after pleading guilty to possessing enough fentanyl to kill more than one-fifth of Maine’s population. Chad Savage admitted to investigators that he had driven to Massachusetts to buy the drugs, which he thought he had almost twice the amount of fentanyl that officials actually seized. (WMTW)
4. Lewiston plans to install new vaping sensors in the middle and high school bathrooms. They’ll be able to detect not only smoking and vaping but loud noises, the number of students in a bathroom and how long they’ve been in there. Despite the $400,000 cost, the school committee voted unanimously in favor of the new bathroom sensors. (WGME)
5. The Arizona Diamondbacks pulled off two road wins to defeat the Philadelphia Phillies in seven games and bring home the National League Championship. The D-Backs will face the Texas Rangers in the World Series. Game One takes place on Friday night. (MLB)
