1. President Joe Biden signed his $1 trillion infrastructure deal into law. The president hopes to use the law to build back his popularity and says it will deliver jobs, clean water, high-speed internet and a clean energy future.
2. The number of Mainers hospitalized with COVID-19 continues to surge with the Maine Center for Disease Control reporting a new record high, 261, on Monday.
3. The Portland school district began vaccinating students age 5-11 with parental consent yesterday at vaccination clinics at three schools, with clinics at eight more schools to come within the next two weeks.
4. Portland & Lewiston are facing major school bus driver shortages. In Lewiston families could be told at 6:30 that morning if a bus is running or not. Lewiston is offering a sign-on bonus of at least $1,000. The Portland School District is looking at offering $3,000 hiring and retention bonuses for school bus drivers as well as allowing staff or volunteers to take students to school in their own vehicles.
5. A stowaway roadrunner (Beep! Beep!) went undetected for more than 2,800 miles as a moving van crossed the United States from Las Vegas to Westbrook. The father and son who discovered the bird inside their rented van called Westbrook police and were put in contact with a nonprofit avian rehabilitation center. Avian Haven is working on the logistics of getting the bird back to Nevada.
