1. More than 2,000 Maine schoolchildren have gotten their first doses of COVID-19 vaccine since those 5 to 11 years old became eligible a week ago. The pace is expected to speed up statewide as more clinics launch.
2. After a long day of hand counting over 17,000 ballots, Portland’s at large city council seat is still yet to be determined. Ballot machines used on election day counted more ballots than were actually cast and disputed ballots are posing an additional challenge. Officials are reconvening at 10 a.m. to continue the recount.
3. Student enrollment has dropped 5.9% in Maine’s community colleges this year. A major factor is the current job market. Students are being pulled from the classroom to well-paying jobs that require little to no experience
4. A Maine lobsterman caught a rare cotton candy lobster in Casco Bay this past weekend. The odds of catching a cotton candy lobster are 1 in 100 million. Bill Coppersmith caught the lobster, which was named Haddie after his granddaughter.
5. Freeport was named one of the fastest growing tourist destinations in the world this winter in a study by Tripadvisor. It was ranked number 7 alongside cities like London, Paris, and Rome.
