The $6 plastic crown Biggie Smalls wore in his famous “King of New York” photograph sold at auction Tuesday for a whopping $600,000. The faux-royal headgear was put up for auction by photographer Barron Claiborne. To his recollection, Claiborne had photographed Notorious B.I.G. for free. “I’m not sure that I even got paid for it,” he says. “I did this because I liked taking pictures of Biggie.” Other items auctioned Tuesday at Sotheby’s first-ever hip-hop auction included Tupac Shakur’s high-school love letters, Salt-N-Pepa’s jackets from the “Push It” music video and Questlove’s drum kit.
