1. President Donald Trump went around Congress and signed four executive orders related to pandemic relief including granting $400 a week for those on unemployment. Loopholes seem to exist in Trump’s orders, and they can be challenged for legality so it’s unclear what will actually go into effect this week.
2. The U.S. tops 5 million coronavirus cases w/ over 162,000 deaths. The Maine CDC reported no new deaths and 16 new cases on Sunday. Maine’s coronavirus-related death toll remains 125 with 405 active cases.
3. Nine people have tested positive for coronavirus at the Georgia high school featured in a viral photo of crowded hallways. A letter sent to parents said six students and three staff members tested positive. The school also reversed the suspension of the sophomore who posted the viral photo and video.
4. A sign at the end of a driveway in Waldo that read ‘BLACK BROWN LBGQT LIVES MATTER TOO’ was vandalized with a swastika. Owner Lousia Carl said “I kind of want to leave it up for a while and I’m thinking about putting up a sign saying, ‘Okay, are we okay with someone in our community doing this?'” She added “We need to wake up to what’s happening around us and happening in our communities and figure out how to deal with it.”
5. The Mid-American Conference became the first FBS conference to postpone its fall sports season on Saturday. One source told Sports Illustrated, “I think by the end of the week the fall sports will be postponed in all conferences.” The Colonial Athletic Association and America East — the conferences in which the University of Maine’s fall sports team belongs suspended their fall sports seasons weeks ago due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
