1. The Taliban took over Afghanistan on Sunday, seizing the capital city and entering the presidential palace after the Afghan President fled the country. Troops evacuated the U.S. embassy and there are reports of “chaos” at the city’s airport as people rush to leave the nation. (INSTAGRAM)
2. The death toll from a magnitude 7.2 earthquake in Haiti soared to at least 1,297 Sunday as rescuers raced to find survivors amid the rubble. The devastation could soon worsen with the coming of Tropical Depression Grace, which is predicted to reach Haiti tonight. (NEWS CENTER)

The governor’s office released a statement in response to a demonstration in Portland’s West End Saturday where at least 200 people rallied against her mandate requiring all health care workers be vaccinated by Oct. 1. “Every person in Maine who is placed in the care of a health care facility has the right to expect – as do their families – that they will receive high-quality and safe care, which includes having their care providers be fully vaccinated in order to protect them against this deadly virus as much as possible.” (WMTW)
4. On Sunday Ogunquit police alerted Mainers that a great white shark named “Charlotte” was spotted a few miles off Ogunquit Beach. Last year, Maine record its first ever deadly shark attack.
5. 25 year old Clara Brown from Falmouth is flying to Tokyo today to make her paralympic debut. Brown said her goal is three medals. She’ll be competing as a cyclist in both track and road events. (PRESS HERALD)
