1. The U.S. tops 5.1 million coronavirus cases w/ over 166,000 deaths. The Maine CDC reported no new deaths and 20 new cases on Wednesday. Maine’s coronavirus-related death toll is 126 with 365 active cases.
2. Despite protests from teachers and parents, Auburn is moving forward with their school reopening plan. Next month, a student can choose to stay home and learn remotely, or go back to school and attend two days in class and three days learning from home or the option teachers were protesting, attend school for four days of the school week.
3. The Cherokee County School District in Georgia has had to close down after only 8 school days. As of Tuesday, the district had over 1,100 students and staff in quarantine. The district had not mandated masks for students, however masks were encouraged.
4. The Big 12 conference announced Wednesday that it plans to proceed with its fall sports schedule in September. The move comes as 2 other Power Five conferences, the Big Ten and the Pac-12 have canceled because of the pandemic. Fall sports will begin after September 1, and football teams will play a total of 10 games. All athletes will be subject to 3 tests per week.
5. Twelve Maine businesses made this year’s Inc. 5000 list of the nation’s fastest-growing privately owned companies. At No. 133, Maine’s highest showing was Brickell Men’s Products. Mast Landing Brewing Co of Westbrook and Origin of Farming also ranked high on the list.
