1. The U.S. tops 3.5 million coronavirus cases with over 137,000 deaths. The Maine CDC reported 12 new cases and no new deaths on Wednesday, keeping the death toll at 114. Maine has 385 active cases, which is the lowest number since May 11. (WMTW)
2. Senator Susan Collins says she wants to debate her democratic challenger, Maine House Speaker Sara Gideon, 16 times, once in each of Maine’s counties, and she wants to start right away. (WGME)
3. USM has canceled all athletic competition through the end of 2020. That means no fall sports, and the elimination of a significant portion of the basketball, hockey and wrestling seasons. 4. 41 spiders and scorpions were abandoned at the Inn Town Motel in Norway. A worker went to check on a tenant who missed rent, and discovered the creatures. 30 of the spiders found are illegal in Maine. They are now located in Lewiston at the animal rehab center, “Mr. Drew and his Animals, too.” (WGME)
5. Due to the stores commitment to health, Hannaford will phase out the selling of tobacco products by the fall in its 183 northeastern stores, 63 of which are in Maine. (WGME)
