1. Three men were arrested early Monday in connection with the armed robbery of a 24-year-old woman in Portland who told police she was stunned by a Taser and struck on the head with a handgun. Officers heard a woman screaming for help near Franklin and Congress streets around 2:30 a.m. Monday and saw three men running from the area, police said. (PH)
2. A 10-foot snakeskin was found over the weekend at Riverbank Park. The area is near where a large snake was first spotted in June, and there have been other sightings since then. Some experts doubt that the skin belongs to the snake, nicknamed Wessie. The fact that the skin looks to be intact is a major indication that it wasn’t shed where it was found. Police said they are planning to send the snakeskin for testing. (WMTW)
3. Despite great weather and plenty of tourists, some seasonal businesses are struggling. The owner of the Sunset Beach Motel in East Boothbay closed two months early because of a staffing shortage. Pier 1 Pizza has had the same “help wanted” sign posted in a window since Memorial Day. Ownder Korey Lewis said “This is the first time in 16 years of being in business I didn’t hire a high school student from Boothbay. It wasn’t that I didn’t want to; nobody applied.” (WMTW)
4. Portland officials are starting a planning process to transform the barren city-owned land known as the Amethyst lot into a premium park along the harbor. City Manager Jon Jennings hopes the city can make better use of the waterfront location. He is launching what is expected to be a year-long planning effort to build a premier waterfront park on the former industrial site that would provide public access to the water and could include a man-made beach.
