1. The House panel investigating the Jan. 6 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol laid the blame firmly on Donald Trump Thursday night. There was an audible gasp in the hearing room when Rep. Liz Cheney read an account that said when Trump was told the Capitol mob was chanting for Vice President Mike Pence to be hanged for refusing to block the election results. Trump responded that maybe they were right, that he “deserves it.”
2. The House passed a bill to raise the age to buy a semi-automatic weapon from 18 to 21 yesterday, but it’s unknown if or when the Senate might take it up. Sen. Angus King said through an aide that he would support raising the age. A spokesperson for Sen. Susan Collins said she “is open to raising the age.”
3. The moose lottery resumes this year as a daylong festival Saturday in Jackman. The annual hunting-permit drawing was done virtually the last two years. The state increased the number of moose permits for this fall’s hunt by just 50 to 4,080.
