1. Paul Manafort was sentenced to 47 months in prison on Thursday. Jurors had found President Trump’s former campaign chairman guilty of two counts of bank fraud, five counts of tax fraud and one count of failing to declare a foreign bank account. Robert Mueller recommended a prison sentence of 19-24 years, leaving many pundits shocked at the relatively light sentence Manafort received. (NPR)
2. Thousand of people from across the state are expected to attend a public memorial service for fallen Berwick Fire Captain Joel Barnes in Portland this weekend. Barnes, 32, was killed in a four-alarm apartment building fire last Friday. Fellow firefighters said he died trying to save another firefighter. The service will be held at Cross Insurance Arena at 11 a.m. Sunday. (NewsCenterMaine)
3. The School Administrative District 54 board of directors voted 14-9 Thursday night to “respectfully retire” the nickname “Indians” for all schools in the Skowhegan district, making it the last in Maine to end the use of Native American nicknames and imagery for its sports teams. (Press Herald)
4. Daylight saving time officially begins Sunday morning at 2 a.m. Clocks will be turned ahead, or “spring” ahead, by one hour. Maine lawmakers are going to consider a pair of bills that would move the state into the Atlantic time zone, which would be the equivalent of Maine being on daylight saving time for the entire year.
