1. President Biden traveled to Independence Hall on Thursday to warn that America’s democratic values are under assault by forces of extremism loyal to former President Donald J. Trump, defining the midterm elections as a “battle for the soul of this nation.”
2. U.S. health advisors endorsed new COVID-19 boosters that target today’s most common omicron strains, saying if enough people roll up their sleeves, the updated shots could blunt a winter surge. The updated shots are only for use as a booster, not for someone’s first-ever vaccinations.
3. AAA predicts this to be the busiest Labor Day travel weekend in three years, reaching pre-pandemic levels. Trends are similar to Memorial Day and Fourth of July weekends this year. AAA anticipates that today will be the busiest travel day of the holiday weekend.
4. The Ocean Avenue elementary school in Portland has launched a fundraiser to help restock the library shelves. The school says it loses more than $2,000 in library books every year, mostly because they are never returned. 5. Twitter is finally answering users’ requests for an edit tweet button. If you want to use it, you’ll have to pay for it. The feature is going through testing and will soon be available for users paying $4.99 a month for Twitter Blue. You’ll be able to edit a tweet up to 30 minutes after sending out a post but it will be marked as “edited” to viewers.
