1. More than 35,000 CMP customers were without power as of 6:!5AM this morning. The storm has als resulted in several Amtrak cancellations and parking bans. Another storm is expected Friday night into Saturday with more rain and snow impacting Maine. Looking ahead to next week, a Nor’easter could impact Maine on Tuesday. (WMTW)
2. The University of Maine announced an $80 million donation from the Harold Alfond Foundation on Wednesday that will go toward athletic facility upgrades at its Orono campus. The gift will go toward building a new complex for soccer and track and field. (PH)
3. Meta said Tuesday it will start hiding inappropriate content from teenagers’ accounts on Instagram and Facebook, including posts about suicide, self-harm and eating disorders. Meta’s announcement comes as the company faces lawsuits from dozens of U.S. states that accuse it of harming young people and contributing to the youth mental health crisis. (WGME)
4. It’s official. 2023 was the hottest year ever recorded on Earth. According to data, temperatures passed the previous high set in 2016 and the Earth was the warmest since the information started being gathered in 1880. The hottest day of 2023 was July 6th when the global average temperature was 62.7 degrees Fahrenheit. (Axios)
5. Oscar Mayer is hiring people to become members of its coveted “Hotdogger” class — and get behind the wheel of its Wienermobiles. The gig pays $35,600 as a base salary but also includes a weekly allowance of $150 for meals and personal travel, 18 days of paid time off, full health benefits, and all hotel expenses covered. Applications for the position, officially titled Wienermobile Spokesperson, are now open through Jan. 31. The gig starts in June. (OM)
