1. A gunman opened fire at a video game tournament being held at a shopping plaza in Jacksonville, Florida, on Sunday afternoon. Three people, including the gunman, died and 11 more were injured. CNN reports that the shooter, identified as 24-year-old David Katz of Baltimore, took his own life after firing at people attending the tournament for the football video game Madden NFL 19. Gamers told WJAX-TV that Katz, who was known as “Bread” in the online gaming community, “snapped” and began targeting his rivals after being defeated in the tournament. He reportedly used a semiautomatic handgun in the assault. (CNN)

2. Senator John McCain passed away Saturday at his home in Arizona. He was 81. The two-time presidential candidate and Vietnam War POW had been battling brain cancer since 2017. Presidents Barack Obama and George W. Bush are expected to deliver eulogies at his funeral, while President Donald Trump reportedly will not be invited to attend. (NY Times)

3. Dozens of people gathered in Portland Sunday afternoon demanding Maine’s senators vote no on President Trump’s Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh. This “Unite for Justice” day of action was one of roughly 180 events around the nation. Organizers said it was the largest single-day protest of a Supreme Court nominee in history. Those who were there say one of the biggest issues they with Kavanaugh is his willingness to rollback abortion rights for women. (NewsCenterMaine)

4. Gieger’s Farmers’ Almanac weather forecast is out and the news is no bueno. “We’re actually calling for teeth-chattering cold,” said Geiger managing editor Sandi Duncan. “It’s going to be cold and it’s going to be snowy. We’re summarizing it as ‘cold and wet’ and the interesting thing is, it looks like winter might start a little bit early. We have some winter storms predicted early on.” The almanac’s grim forecast is in contrast to rival The Old Farmer’s Almanac, which is calling for a mild winter. However, the Geiger team last winter called pretty much every major storm we had and it also nailed its predictions for muggy hot weather in parts of July and August. (Press Herald)
