1. Mainers got a chance to say a final goodbye to former President George H.W. Bush Sunday. About 200 people gathered with their dogs at Gooch’s Beach and told stories of close encounters with the 41st president, who spent his summers at the Bush family compound at Walker’s Point in Kennebunkport. 2. Five people were displaced from their home early Sunday morning when fire swept through their West End residence in Portland. Deputy Fire Chief Chad Johnston said that despite the fact that the fire broke out in the middle of the night, all five individuals safely made it out of the two-family home at 21 Summer St., which was equipped with working smoke detectors. 3. The Maine-themed restaurant group Luke’s Lobster is building a new location at the end of Portland Pier that is destined to become one of the Portland waterfront’s most prominent eateries. The restaurant at 60 Portland Pier will be the seafood chain’s largest by far, with 175 indoor seats and a patio that seats 25, according to company founder Luke Holden, a native of Cape Elizabeth. The typical Luke’s location seats about 25 patrons. Set to open at the beginning of summer 2019, the Portland Pier location will be Luke’s second in Maine. (Press Herald)
4. The Black Bears were picked to finish eighth in the Colonial Athletic Association preseason poll. After Friday night’s 23-18 win over Weber State, they’re in the national semifinals for the first time. The Black Bear offense made just enough big plays Friday night – including a 67-yard touchdown pass from Chris Ferguson to Earnest Edwards and a clinching 45-yard run by Ramon Jefferson – to hold the lead. But it was the defense that shined brightest. Maine held Weber State to minus-1 rushing yards, intercepted four passes and had 13 tackles for a loss. Maine will next play at Eastern Washington at 2 p.m. on Saturday. (Press Herald)
5. Roger the famously ripped kangaroo has died. Tributes are flowing in for the red kangaroo after he died of natural causes at the age of 12. Roger became an online sensation after photos showing his muscular physique went viral. In an emotional farewell, Roger’s keeper said, “We have lost our beautiful boy.” (Twitter)
