- On Saturday, following President Biden’s order, the U.S. military gunned down a suspected Chinese spy balloon. The balloon had flown over the United States for several days. China insists it was a civilian research vessel and has expressed its “strong dissatisfaction and protest” against the decision. (CNN)
- President Biden will give his second State of the Union address tomorrow. Biden is expected to devote much of his speech to highlighting his efforts to create jobs, fight inflation and improve the nation’s infrastructure. (PH)
- All Towed Up, towing company, is being accused of illegally towing vehicles in the Bangor area and forcing victims to pay large “impound” fees. in order to get their vehicles back. People reported that their vehicles had been towed due to various parking violations without a request by police or property owners to do so. (WGME)
- Mt. Washington Observatory in New Hampshire broke new US records for wind chill on Saturday. The 6,288 foot summit reached a record-setting wind chill of minus 108 degrees Fahrenheit. (CNN)
5. Two Mainers won Grammy awards Sunday. Dave Gutter co-wrote the song “Stompin’ Ground” for musician Aaron Neville, which won in the best American roots performance category. Bob Ludwig, of Gateway Mastering Studios in Portland won his 13th Grammy in the best historical album category for his work on the 20th anniversary edition of Wilco’s “Yankee Hotel Foxtrot.” (PH)
