1. Family, friends and law enforcement across the country are pausing to honor Cpl. Eugene “Gene” Cole. Cole, 61, was shot and killed in the line of duty during the early morning hours of April 25 in Norridgewock. Cole was a 13-year veteran of the Somerset County Sheriff’s Office. Hundreds of people, including family members, friends, members of the community and law enforcement paid their respects to Cole during visiting hours at the Skowhegan Armory Sunday evening. A celebration of Cole’s life will begin at noon Monday, May 7, at the Cross Insurance Center in Bangor. Thousands of people are expected to attend the service, including many members of the law enforcement communities in Maine and New England. The public is welcome to line the streets while Cpl. Cole is escorted via police motorcade from Skowhegan to Bangor. (WMTW)
2.When Black Elephant Hostel opens this summer at 33 Hampshire St., it will be the first hostel in Portland and one of the few in Maine. Owner, Heather Loeber, hopes her more humble lodging option will help open Portland to younger people who can’t afford expensive hotel rooms and who want to experience Maine’s largest city with fellow travelers. She told the Press Herald a bunk at her hostel will cost $40 a night and a double room, with locking door, will cost only $90. (Press Herald)
3. 76ers guard Marco Belinelli nailed a desperation two-pointer from the corner to tie the game — and trigger confetti — at the end of regulation, but he couldn’t connect on a three-point heave in the final seconds of overtime to save his team a second time. In a wild Game 3 that saw 15 lead changes — including eight ties in the fourth quarter alone — Boston prevailed for a 101-98 victory. The Celtics now lead the series, 3-0, and have a chance to close out the Sixers in Game 4. Game 4 is tonight 6pm in Philly. (Boston.com)
4. The Guinness World Record holder for eating the most Big Macs added to his milestone on Friday by eating his 30,000th Big Mac. The New York Post reports that 64-year-old Don Gorske has been eating Big Macs everyday since 1972 and broke the word record in 2016 when he ate his 28,788th burger. He ate his 30,000th burger at his local McDonald’s in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin. “I love the patties, I love the sauce, I just can’t get enough,” Gorske says of his obsession. He also points out, however, “I’m healthy as a horse. I weigh 190 pounds, and my cholesterol is 165. I’m better than normal.” (UPI)
