1. Columbus Day. This day commemorates the landing of Christopher Columbus to the new world and celebrate both his discoveries and his Italian-Spanish heritage. However Portland no longer celebrates Columbus day as a municipal holiday. As a result of a unanimous city council vote this year the second Monday of October will now be known as Indigenous Peoples’ Day. Recognizing indigenous people on Columbus Day is a growing trend across the U.S. A few states – Alaska, Oregon, South Dakota and Vermont – don’t recognize Columbus Day.

Vice President Mike Pence said he left Sunday’s Indianapolis Colts game after 15 players from the San Francisco 49ers chose to kneel during the national anthem. “I left today’s Colts game because @POTUS and I will not dignify any event that disrespects our soldiers, our Flag, or our National Anthem,” Pence wrote in a tweet. A customer at Maple’s Bakery in Yarmouth paid for the meals of 59 customers on Saturday – one for every life lost in the mass shooting in Las Vegas. “He wanted to pay for 59 people in line after him,” Owner Robin Ray said. “He wanted to be an inspiration to people in a time that doesn’t feel good. Those are the kinds of people that we have come in here, and anyone can be that kind of person,” Ray said. (WGME)
4. The Boston Red Sox will play baseball for at least one more day after taking game 3 of the ALDS yesterday. Houston still leads the best-of-five series, 2-1, and can clinch it today when the teams meet again at Fenway. Rick Porcello will start for Boston, Charlie Morton for Houston. 5. AOL announced Friday that it will be discontinuing its Instant Messenger service on December 15. The chat app was considered a pioneering innovation when it debuted way back in 1997. “We know there are so many loyal fans who have used AIM for decades and we loved working and building the first chat app of its kind since 1997,” the company wrote on the AIM help page.
