1. More than 49,000 members of the United Auto Workers walked off General Motors factory floors or set up picket lines early this morning a s contract talks with the company deteriorated into a strike. Workers shut down 33 manufacturing plants in nine states across the U.S., as well as 22 parts distribution warehouses. Because public statements from both sides conflict, it’s hard to tell how long the strike will last. (Press Herald)
2. Starting Thursday, Maine drivers are prohibited from using, manipulating or holding mobile phones, hand-held electronic devices or portable electronic devices while operating a motor vehicle, unless specifically exempted by law. Expect swift and widespread enforcement with few exceptions, starting on the day the law takes effect. First-time offenders face a $50 fine. Subsequent offenses are $250. (Press Herald)
3. Wide receiver Antonio Brown started his New England Patriots career off well Sunday, catching a 20-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Tom Brady in the 43-0 romp of the Miami Dolphins. Brown did not stick around after the game to speak to reporters. Brown signed with the Patriots last week, after being cut by the Oakland Raiders. ESPN also reports that the Brown has declined to sign a $2 million-plus agreement with a woman who accused him of sexual assault in a civil lawsuit filed last week. (ESPN)
4. High numbers of a species of jellyfish that can grow to huge sizes have been sighted in recent months in the Gulf of Maine and some of its beaches. The lion’s mane jellyfish, believed to be the world’s largest, can grow to five or more feet across, with tentacles more than 100 feet long. This year’s total number of jellyfish is likely to be about average. But usually, fewer than half are lion’s manes, and this year, it’s almost all of them. Scientists are puzzling over why. (WGME)
