1. Despite the opposition of literally every Congressional Democrat and a dozen Republicans, the House followed the U.S. Senate’s lead Wednesday by passing a massive tax cut that reduces corporations’ federal burden while temporarily doing the same for many individuals, including the ultra-rich. Critics say the tax package will deplete vital federal programs while dramatically increasing the national debt and placing a heavier burden on middle-class taxpayers once certain cuts expire in 2025. It also nullifies the Affordable Care Act’s individual mandate, no longer requiring people to purchase health insurance and therefore leading to an increase in premiums as client pools grow smaller. 2. The death of 2-year-old, Kloe Hawksley, in Bucksport has been declared a homicide. Investigators say the toddler died in October, but they are now raising questions, after getting autopsy results. Police said they were looking into who was caring for Kloe, but provided no other information. Anyone with information about Kloe or her death is asked to contact state police. (WGME)
3. Apple has confirmed that updates in iOS intentionally reduce speed in older phones in order to preserve the life of batteries as they degrade. (Twitter)
4. A Portland Police Officer is getting recognized for his angelic voice. He’s become an overnight internet sensation. Officer Jeremy Turner stood in Tommy’s Park and sang a chilling rendition of “O Holy Night.” Video of the performance went viral w/ tens of thousands of views from all over the country. Turner has been singing since he was 6-years-old, and has a degree in music performance from the University of Southern Maine. Turner graduated and went on to become a dispatcher, then a police officer. (WCSH6)
5. A Secret Santa dropped in unannounced Wednesday night at Catherine’s Cupboard – the town of Standish’s food pantry located in Standish Town Hall. Secret Santa and his helper, Mrs. Claus, arrived around the time that 50 people were sitting down to eat dinner and began to hand out envelopes stuffed with a $100 bill. “We’re doing this because we want to spread the holiday cheer,” Santa said. The couple has given away $20,000, with the Standish food pantry probably being their last stop. Santa and his wife say they hope to expand their efforts next year to include more towns. The couple visited food pantries in Naples and Bridgton on Tuesday. (Press Herald)
