1. Maine has the highest COVID-19 infection rate among all states after reporting more than 1,000 new cases for a second straight day on Wednesday. 372 new cases per 100,000 residents over the past seven days is nearly three times higher than the national average of 130 cases.
2. Rick Lawrence was sworn in as the Maine Supreme Judicial Court’s first Black justice Wednesday afternoon in Augusta. A Harvard graduate, Lawrence served 22 years on the Maine district court.
3. 3 new public restrooms could be coming to downtown Portland. The portable facilities would be located near Central Fire Station, on Monument Way and near the entrance to the Portland Fish Pier on Commercial Street. City staff will also present the plan to the council’s housing and economic development committee later this month.
4. Cinco De Mayo – Today marks the day of the Mexican army’s victory over the French in 1862 at the Battle of Puebla. More popular in the United States than Mexico, Cinco de Mayo has become associated with the celebration of Mexican-American culture.
