1. President Trump reportedly tried to console the pregnant widow of an Army sergeant who died on a Green Beret mission in Africa this month by telling her about her fallen husband, “He knew what he signed up for…but when it happens, it hurts anyway.” “Yeah, he said that. So insensitive,” said Democratic Congresswoman Frederica Wilson, who was present when La David Johnson’s family received Trump’s five-minute phone call on Tuesday. Trump has since tweeted that Wilson “totally fabricated” the account, while the soldier’s mother has since told The Washington Post, “President Trump did disrespect my son and my daughter and also me and my husband.” Johnson was one of four U.S. soldiers killed in the October 4 mission. Trump had faced criticism for not addressing their deaths until 12 days later, when he finally (and inaccurately) said on Monday, “If you look at President Obama and other presidents, most of them didn’t make calls. A lot of them didn’t make calls.” He later added, “President Obama, I think, probably did sometimes.” (WP)
2. A student at Bonny Eagle High School will not be allowed to use his preferred photo for the high school yearbook, because it depicts him holding a gun. Senior Wade Gelinas said hunting is family tradition, and wanted his high school yearbook photo to be one of him holding his shotgun. “It’s just my sport. It’s just what I do. I don’t play football. I don’t play basketball. I just hunt,” said Gelinas. “Drugs, alcohol, weapons, tobacco are not allowed at school, and you cannot wear clothing that has pictures of weapons on it,” said Principal Lori Napolitano. “We just want to draw the line at weapons of any kind being in the picture and that way we’re not trying to pass judgment on which ones are promoting violence or which ones aren’t.” (WSCH6)
3. Scarborough is making a pitch to become the new home of Amazon. The company is looking to build a second headquarters, and proposals are due Thursday. The Scarborough Downs off Route 1 is the area the town is pitching to Amazon to build their new headquarters. They admit it’s a long shot, but they’re hoping Amazon considers them because it would bring as many as 50,000 new full time jobs to the area. Other New England cities competing include Boston, Worcester, and Manchester. (WGME)
4. Celtics forward Gordon Hayward sent a video message from his hospital bed before heading into surgery on Wednesday night, telling Boston fans at the team’s home opener: ‘‘It’s hurting me that I can’t be there.’’ Hayward is expected to make a full recovery but it’s not known if it will be this season. The Bucks spoiled the Celtics Home Opener 108-100. (Boston)
