1. Thousands of people are expected in downtown Portland on today for the funeral of Maine State Police Detective Benjamin J. Campbell. Campbell stopped to assist a motorist on April 3 when he was fatally struck by a tire that detached from a passing logging truck. He would have turned 32 Monday. Portland officials announced that a number of local streets will be closed because of the service and warned drivers to expect extra congestion around the Cross Insurance Arena. Street closures will begin at 8 a.m. and last until 3 p.m. (Press Herald)
2. City council chambers were filled Monday night with people looking to make their voices heard on the earned sick pay ordinance. The measure would give most Portland workers one hour of earned sick pay for every 30 hours worked. The vote on the earned sick pay ordinance will happen on May 6. (NewsCenterMaine)
3. The Virginia Cavaliers beat Texas Tech 85-77 in overtime for their first NCAA men’s basketball national title on Monday. Kyle Guy finished with 24 points for Virginia, while De’Andre Hunter had 27 points and seven rebounds. Virginia’s title comes a year after the team fell in the first round, becoming the first overall #1 seed to lose to a 16-seed. (USA Today)
