1. By a 6-3 majority, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that LGBTQ employees cannot be fired based on their sexual orientation or gender identity. Justice Neil Gorsuch cited the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which outlaws discrimination because of sex, in his decision. Gorsuch and another conservative, John Roberts, joined their more liberal colleagues in making the decision. (LA TIMES)
2. Sen. Susan Collins, is coming under fire for her 2018 vote to confirm Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh. Maine House Speaker Sara Gideon, Collins’s likely general election opponent tweeted “Judge Kavanaugh voted against banning companies from firing employees for being gay or transgender,” Gideon said in a tweet. “It’s clear that Senator Collins will continue to be a reliable vote for Trump’s anti-LGBTQ+ nominees. 3. The U.S. Coronavirus cases top 2.1 million. America’s death toll stands at more than 116,000. The Maine CDC on Monday reported 17 new cases for a total of 2,810 of which 520 are active. One new death was reported, bringing the figure to 101. The latest death was identified as a woman in her 40s from Androscoggin County. (PRESS HERALD)
4. Gov. Janet Mills announced Monday that restaurants in Cumberland, York and Androscoggin counties can resume indoor dining on Wednesday, citing “encouraging trends” in Maine’s COVID-19 infection and hospitalization rates. Bars, breweries, fitness centers, nail salons and tattoo parlors in those three counties also will be able to operate under the same rules already in place in Maine’s 13 other counties.(PRESS HERALD)
