1. A medical examiner for Hennepin County, Minnesota, classified George Floyd’s death as a homicide on Monday. They concluded that his heart stopped as police restrained him and compressed his neck. The medical examiner’s report found no evidence “to support a diagnosis of traumatic asphyxia or strangulation.” The Floyd family commissioned a separate autopsy, which ruled his death a homicide due to asphyxiation from neck and back compression. 2. Protesters across the U.S. took to the streets again Monday night to protest the death of George Floyd on May 24. Violence started in Washington D.C., early as riot police used tear gas and flash grenades to clear peaceful protesters from a city park.
That action was apparently planned so that President Trump could walk to a nearby church for a photo op while holding a Bible. Forty cities imposed curfews, and National Guard members were deployed in at least 23 states and Washington, D.C. (NY TIMES)
3. Black Lives Matter protests continued for the fourth day across Maine, as hundreds took to the streets in protest against police brutality. The protests had remained peaceful until late Monday night in Portland when police in riot gear fired pepper spray into the crowd. In Bangor, protests began around 5 p.m. at the Bangor City Hall. At the Bangor protests, police kneeled with protestors and hugged them in support. (NEWS CENTER)
4. The United States coronavirus cases top 1.8 million. America’s death toll stands at more than 105,000. The Maine CDC Sunday reported 24 more cases of the coronavirus and no additional deaths. The statewide death toll stands at 89 with 2,349 cases of which 674 are active.(PRESS HERALD)
5. President Donald Trump is planning to visit the Puritan Medical Products facility in Guilford, ME on Friday to tour the COVID-19 nasal swab manufacturing plant there and will deliver remarks. Gov. Janet Mills said she asked that Trump “check his rhetoric at the door” when he arrives in Maine. (NEWS CENTER)
