1. Early commuters across southern Maine faced patches of black ice on the roads Monday morning, and police say weather was a likely contributing factor in a head-on crash in Westbrook that killed three people. Captain Sean Lally can’t recall an accident in Westbrook that killed this many people. He says the lone survivor was the driver of a pickup truck, who was taken to Maine Medical Center. (WGME)

2. Lewiston Mayor Shane Bouchard resigned Friday after calling elderly black people “antique farm equipment.” The Republican texted that to his former mistress, who’s since shared more than 150 of their texts. He also compared a meeting with his fellow Republicans to a Ku Klux Klan gathering. Bouchard admitted he says “stupid things and stupid jokes occasionally.” Bouchard is also being investigated for possible illegal activity. (Bloomberg)

3. A legislative committee voted Monday to kill a bill that would have changed the Maine state flag to an earlier and more simplistic 1901 design. But the panel did approve a bill that would direct Secretary of State Matt Dunlap to design a special flag for the state’s bicentennial celebration in 2020. (Pressherald)

4. The great black hawk that was euthanized after it took up residence in Deering Oaks park and sustained frostbite during a storm in January will be mounted and displayed at the Maine State Museum. It was only the second time a great black hawk was seen in the United States, Maine Audubon said. (NYTimes)

5. Girl Scout Day. This celebration commemorates the day in 1912 that a woman named Juliette “Daisy” Gordon Low organized the first ever Girl Scout meeting in Savannah, Georgia. Michelle Obama, Venus Williams, Taylor Swift, Hillary Clinton, and Martha Stewart were all girl scouts. (MentalFloss)
