1. President Trump told a crowd of about 400 people in New Hampshire on Monday that a get-tough approach with the death penalty for major traffickers is the key to beating back the opioid crisis that claims thousands of American lives each week, including an average of more than one Mainer every day. The American Civil Liberties Union issued a statement Monday opposing Trump’s proposal and noting that the U.S. Supreme Court has repeatedly rejected death sentences in cases where there has been no murder. 2. A package destined for an address in Austin exploded inside a FedEx distribution facility outside San Antonio early Tuesday. The package contained shrapnel consisting of nails and pieces of metal, sources said, but none of the 75 employees inside the facility were injured. Authorities have not yet said if this is related to this month’s serial bombings in Austin. (WGME)
3. A fourth March nor’easter is expected to bring some snow to Maine this week. Snow develops Wednesday evening and ends early Thursday morning. Most of the accumulation will happen between 5 p.m. Wednesday and 7 a.m. Thursday. Most of the region should expect 3-6 inches. Slightly higher amounts of 4-8 inches are possible in York County and southern New Hampshire. (WGME)
4. A new birth control pill is showing promise as means of contraception for men when taken daily for a month. A recent study gave 100 men, ages 18 to 50, different doses of the drug to see what would happen. Overall, 83 men completed the study. Some showed lower levels of testosterone and two hormones required for sperm production. According to the study, the pill must be taken with food to be effective. All the subjects passed safety tests, according to the study, but some did experience weight gain. (WMTW)
