1. President Biden announced Monday that eligible borrowers can now officially apply for student loan forgiveness at the studentaid.gov. The U.S. will forgive $10,000 of student loans for people earning less than $125,000 per year. Lower income borrowers who received Pell Grants will have $20,000 of debt forgiven.
2. Portland Mayor Kate Snyder delivered a State of the City Address. She said “We need more housing, we have a homelessness crisis in the State of Maine, we see more violent crime.” She noted that Portland has carried a lot of the burden of addressing these statewide issues, but that it is ultimately a shared responsibility. She also talked about ways the city has made progress to address the issue, including the construction of a new Homeless Services Center set to open in March.
3. A New Hampshire DOT mobile message board was altered with a vulgar message about President Biden. If DOT officials can identify the sign vandal, charges are likely. It’s illegal to tamper with construction equipment in a work zone.
4. Workers at the Starbucks in Portland’s Old Port voted Monday to form a union. Their hope is that a contract will result in higher pay and better working conditions.
5. The Topsham Planning Board approved a site plan for a Market Basket grocery store after meeting with project engineers. Set to be built at 169 Topsham Fair Mall Road, the new supermarket will sit within 5 miles of two Hannaford stores, a Shaw’s and a Target. Topsham will be the third location in Maine.
