1. Officials say Douglas Heath was wanted by Maine police for a car chase in June that started in Maine. New Hampshire police spotted Heath’s car on Monday and tried to pull him over. Heath was armed and killed by police in an ensuing gun battle. (NewsCenterMaine)
2. Michael Cohen, President Donald Trump’s former personal lawyer and “fixer,” pleaded guilty Tuesday to campaign finance violations and other charges, saying he and “‘the candidate'” arranged the payment of hush money to porn star Stormy Daniels and a former Playboy model to influence the election. The guilty plea came almost at the same moment former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort was convicted in Alexandria, Virginia, of eight financial crimes in the first trial to come out of special counsel Robert Mueller’s sprawling Russia investigation. 3. The Lost Kitchen is a super-exclusive restaurant in Freedom, Maine (population: 731) that only seats 40 to 45 diners per night for nine months of the year. And if that sounds like it must be impossible to snag a reservation, you’re right! The Washington Post reports that chef-owner Erin French decided to switch to a so-old-it’s-new reservation system this year, demanding that wannabe diners send an actual postcard via snail mail. There’s just one problem: She wound up getting nearly 20,000 postcards. “I wasn’t trying to be cool,” French says about deciding on the postcard system, which some have called pretentious. “I was just trying to survive.” But a diner who successfully snagged a postcard reservation says, “It was so nice to just go the old-fashioned route. It was neat to anticipate and wait for the day of the calls starting to come and see if I was going to get a call, and when the number popped up on my phone, my heart started to race, and I was like, ‘No way.’'” (WashingtonPost)
4. The Maine Principals’ Association is exploring the possibility of an eight-man football league that would play for a championship – an alternative for some schools playing the traditional 11-man version of the sport. The key reason for eight-man football, obviously, is that fewer players are needed to play. Proponents cite declining high school enrollments (down 16.8 percent statewide from 2006-07 to 2015-16), with many schools struggling to maintain football rosters with as many as 25 players.
