1. Whitey Bulger, the Boston mobster who inspired films starring Jack Nicholson and Johnny Depp, was found slain in a federal prison in West Virginia on Tuesday at the age of 89. Citing three people briefed on the situation, The Boston Globe reports that a fellow inmate with Mafia ties was being investigated for the suspected slaying. After famously eluding police for 16 years before his 2011 capture, Bulger was in the midst of serving a life sentence for 11 murders, as well as extortion and money laundering. Brian Kelly, one of the former federal prosecutors who tried Bulger, said in a statement that he hopes the mobster’s death “brings some closure to the families of his many victims.” (Boston Globe)
2. An overflow crowd estimated at 1,500 people filled the Congregation Bet Ha’am synagogue in South Portland on Tuesday evening for a vigil to commemorate the lives of the 11 people who were gunned down Saturday morning at the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh. Speakers said the outpouring of love and compassion for the victims represented a powerful display of the goodness in people that continues to shine despite the hate-filled rhetoric and acts of violence that have darkened the country’s mood in recent weeks and months. 3. A man has been charged, after police say he stabbed a teenager in the parking lot at a local high school. Police say the stabbing took place in the Scarborough High School parking lot at halftime of Friday’s soccer game. Prosecutors have charged 20-year-old Nicolas Blanchard with aggravated assault for allegedly stabbing a 15-year-old student in the chest. (WGME)
4. L.L. Bean is celebrating the Boston Red Sox’s 2018 World Series win with a special edition of its infamous Bean Boots for the team. The boots feature red leather, blue rubber and the numbers 108-54, representing the team’s record season. The boots were gifted to the team and Red Sox staff and will not be sold to the public. A 12-foot tall replica of the boot will be part of the Red Sox parade today. (WMTW)
