1. Investigators trying to determine what sparked the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history have found the massacre to be the work of a sophisticated planner with the means and desire to inflict unprecedented carnage. As he fired round after round during an 11-minute stretch from a suite on the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino, Paddock used video cameras to keep an eye out for police storming his hotel room. In delivering what BuzzFeed called a “bizarre, train-of-thought speech” during his visit to storm-ravaged Puerto Rico on Tuesday, President Trump said that Hurricane Irma wasn’t “a real catastrophe like [Hurricane] Katrina.” In a somewhat playful tone, he added that the island territory had “thrown our budget a little out of whack because we’ve spent a lot of money on Puerto Rico—and that’s fine; we’ve saved a lot of lives.” He then shifted back to the Irma-Katrina death toll comparison, saying, “Sixteen versus literally thousands of people. You can be very proud. Everyone around this table and everybody watching can really be very proud of what’s been taking place in Puerto Rico.” (BuzzFeed)
