This year marks the 10th anniversary of the XXL Freshman classes. Last years Freshman, Lil Uzi Vert, Lil Yachty, Kodak Black, Desiigner, 21 Savage and more caused some controversy in the rap game with the breakthrough of the so called “mumble rap.” This year’s class comes with no shortage of controversy. With the fan’s choice XXXTentacion front and center, you know this cover will be heavily talked about by the fans.
The list of all 10 artists include: Kamaiyah, A Boogie Wit Da Hoody, PnB Rock, XXXTentacion, Playboi Carti, MadeinTYO, Aminé, Ugly God, Kap G and Kyle. With Carti, Boogie and PnB thought of as shoe-ins for this years list, and many people thinking Tokyo deserved the cover last year, This is a heavy hitting Freshman class.
We have ATL’s Kap G representing the south and Mexican American rappers. Kyle got some help from former Freshman Lil Yachty in his hit “Ispy” to get the recognition he’s been working years for. Aminé had a huge hit with “Caroline” and everyone knows Tokyo’s “Uber Everywhere” propelling them onto this list. Carti has the song of the summer so far with “Magnolia.” Ugly God and XXX both have crazy internet followings through soundcloud, getting millions of streams per song. And Kamiyah is the first girl MC from the West Coast to get the cover.
