Young Thug took the limelight at the VMA’s when he won his first VMA award, and for a music video he never even showed up for! Thug’s work “Wyclef Jean”(300 Entertainment/Atlantic Records) won an award that was in the same category as other hit songs “Green Light” by Lorde, Future’s “Mask Off”, The Weeknd’s “Reminder”, and lastly The Chainsmokers’ “Closer”.
Due to the creative genius of the directing crew Pomp&Clout, “Wyclef Jean” won Best Editing award at the 2017 MTV Video Music Awards. When Young Thug didn’t show up for his shoot, the Director’s had to come up with a creative plan to finish the shoot without the rapper. A little while after the shooting of the music video, Young Thug sent footage of himself he wanted incorporated into the video. Luckily, the crew supporting him new how to handle the situation and were skilled enough to make the video happen.
“Wyclef Jean” was featured off of the mixtape Thug released in 2016 Jeffery. This mixtape, named after himself expresses Thug’s growth. In an interview with XXL Magazine he explained, “I guess I’m just getting mature. I’m getting older,” said Thug. “I don’t want my kids to grow up and be like, ‘My dad’s name is Young Thug’ or ‘I want to be a young thug because my dad was a young thug.’ I want to be who I really am. I’m really Jeffery. I’m not no lame or anything, I’m kinda cool. I’m a cool person. So, Jeffery…I feel like I used to hate that name so much, but now I’m understanding the name. My dad gave me the name. The name is who I really am.”
