1. The Maine DOT estimates around 15,000 vehicles drove in from out of state to witness the solar eclipse. Sugarloaf usually draws between 6,000 to 7,000 skiers; the eclipse brought in around 10,000. Rangely is reporting first estimates of roughly 20,000 visitors; the greater Greenville area is estimating 30,000. 2. Maine’s major hospitals reported seeing no patients in emergency rooms with eye pain or damage from looking at the sun after Monday’s eclipse. Maine Google searches for “eye damage” did spike post eclipse. (BDN)
3. The deadline to file Maine state taxes in eight counties impacted by January’s storms now matches the federal tax extension deadline of July 15, 2024. If filing paper returns affected taxpayers in Cumberland, Hancock, Knox, Lincoln, Sagadahoc, Waldo, Washington, and York counties should write “MAINE FLOODING” across the top of their return. (NCM)
4. RSU 21 / Kennebunk is hoping higher wages will attract more potential bus drivers. To be fully staffed the district needs 33 drivers. They’re currently looking to fill 12 positions with pay ranging from $24.97 to $30.59 an hour + benefits. (WGME)
