1. Taxes are due in the following Maine counties as indicated: April 17, 2024: Aroostook. June 17, 2024: Androscoggin, Franklin, Kennebec, Oxford, Penobscot, Piscataquis, Somerset. July 15, 2024: Cumberland, Hancock, Knox, Lincoln, Sagadahoc, Waldo, Washington, York. Affected taxpayers are encouraged to file electronically. Affected taxpayers filing paper returns should write “MAINE FLOODING” across the top of their return. Affected taxpayers are still encouraged to make payments and file if they are able and prepared to do so before July 15, 2024. (Maine)
2. The Maine House of Representatives has voted to reconsider a tax break to help the Portland Sea Dogs renovate Hadlock Field. It comes a day after the house initially voted the tax break down in a 62-78 vote Monday. The Sea Dogs anticipate needing to spend $8 million to $10 million to upgrade Hadlock Field by April 2025 to avoid losing their affiliation. If lost, the team would have to relocate or fold. (WMTW)
3. Casco Bay Ferry service says it needs to raise rates for the first time in 15 years after losing millions in revenue over time. Right now, peak season prices are $7.70 to go to Peaks Island, round-trip. Casco Bay Lines says it needs to raise that to $14 round-trip. The public will get to weigh in again on April 25. (WGME)
4. In a recent study Remote.com found Portland, ME to be the best city in the USA for remote work. Portland, Maine was ranked 7th overall. This list considered things such as quality of life, internet, safety, incentives, and more. Portland was ranked highly due to its location, increased diversity, and tax credits. The next highest US city was Honolulu, HI, coming in at #19. Madrid, Spain was #1 overall. (POP)
5. Twenty-five new recordings have been inducted into the National Recording Registry run by the Library of Congress. Two Hip-Hop recordings were acknowledged; The Notorious B.I.G. Ready to Die and Doug E. Fresh and Slick Rick’s “La-Di-Da-Di.” The National Recording Preservation Board selects new titles every year that are “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant” and at least ten years old.
