1. The federal government says Maine’s policy on transgender athletes in girls’ sports violates Title IX. U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi warned Governor Mills that legal action could follow to enforce Trump’s executive order on gender.
Senator Susan Collins supports clarifying Title IX, ensuring that transgender athletes do not compete on girls teams. She said “Just this past weekend, I was in Portland watching the state high school basketball championship, which my hometown of Caribou won by one point. It was an exciting game. I don’t think it would have been fair if a biological male, identifying as transgender, had played on either team. It would have tilted the playing field in a really unfair way.” (WGME)
2. Trump postponed 25% tariffs on many Mexican and some Canadian imports for a month, after concerns over economic fallout. The White House says the tariffs aim to curb fentanyl smuggling. Trump insists “reciprocal” tariffs will still take effect on April 2. (WMTW)
3. Wentworth School in Scarborough was evacuated Thursday after reports of a possible gas leak. 11 students were transported to area hospitals for evaluation and were all released. Officials found no evidence of a gas leak or carbon monoxide inside or outside the building. (WMTW)
4. The Social Security Administration is ending its long-standing policy of letting parents register newborns for Social Security numbers at the hospital. Instead, parents must now visit one of the state’s eight Social Security offices. Pediatric advocates in Maine call the change burdensome and unnecessary. No reason was given for the policy shift. 5. The US (minus Hawaii and Arizona) will spring forward clocks by one hour at 2am on March 9th, 2025 kicking off Daylight Saving time.
