1. Portland firefighters responded to an all-hands boat fire Tuesday night at Portland Yacht Services on Commercial Street. Crews were called to a fishing vessel named “Whitecap” that was on land at the time of the fire. The boat’s owner told reporters he had been doing maintenance work himself when the fire started — not the marina. No word yet on injuries or what caused the fire. (NCM)
2. The search continues for a Maine inmate who walked away from a work site in Thomaston earlier this week. The Department of Corrections says 45-year-old Brian Day left the job site Monday without permission, and arrest warrants have now been issued for both Day and a New Hampshire woman believed to be traveling with him. Officials say the pair may be driving a maroon 2011 Nissan Altima, and anyone who spots them is urged to call 911. (WMTW)
3. Students at Southern Maine Community College say rising gas prices are making it harder to afford the daily commute to campus. AAA says Maine’s average gas price has climbed to 4-dollars-48-cents a gallon — nearly a dollar fifty higher than this time last year. Some students say they’re now carpooling, cutting back on driving, switching to electric vehicles, or even considering motorcycles just to save money. (WMTW)
4. Delta Air Lines is cutting complimentary snacks and drinks on shorter flights. Starting May 19th, passengers in Main Cabin and Comfort Plus on routes under 350 miles will no longer get free beverages or snacks — impacting about 450 flights a day. First class passengers will still receive full service, while longer flights will keep standard snack and drink options for everyone. (Fox)
5. Fox Sports is looking for a sports fan to watch all 104 matches of the FIFA World Cup from a transparent cube in Times Square. The chosen candidate will be paid $50,000 to create and share social content throughout the tournament. Fox Sports hopes to engage a broader sports fan base with the role, focusing on general enthusiasm rather than in-depth soccer knowledge. To apply for the job, candidates must update their Indeed profile, showcase their journalism and content creation skills, and share a video explaining why they are the right fit using the hashtag #ChiefWorldCupWatcher.
