Last week, a Whole Foods customer noticed that her local store was selling pre-peeled oranges packaged in plastic containers for $6 a pound. “If only nature would find a way to cover these oranges so we didn’t need to waste so much plastic on them,” she tweeted. The tweet went viral and Whole Foods faced a massive social media attack. Whole Foods apologized and promised to pull the oranges from the shelves. “A lot of our customers love the convenience of our cut produce offerings, but this was a simple case where a handful of stores experimented with a seasonal product spotlight that wasn’t fully thought through,” Whole Foods said in a statement.
