1. Mainers gathered Sunday night to remember family, friends and all loved ones who died from a substance abuse disorder. Last year, 272 Mainers died of drug overdoses amid the state’s heroin epidemic. Sunday’s silent walk started Portland’s Monument Square at 6:30 p.m. It ended with a vigil in Deering Oaks. (WMTW)
2. Officials said the fire chief of Old Orchard Beach, Ricky Plummer, was arrested Saturday morning and charged with one count of arson in connection with a marsh fire on April 15 that burned 42 acres at the Jones Creek Marsh. (WCSH)
3. The first cruise ship to visit Portland this tourist season is under surveillance by the Centers for Disease Control for norovirus. The CDC reported 252 of 919 passengers on board have become ill. Eight of the ship’s 520 crew members have also gotten sick, the CDC said. (BD)
4. Milb.com, the official website of Minor League Baseball, is running a Food Fight contest pitting every minor league team’s signature ballpark treat against one another. The Sea Dogs’ offering is the Mount Dessert Island, described as a “fried dough shell filled with soft-serve ice cream and topped with hot fudge, caramel, whipped cream, rainbow sprinkles, Reese’s Pieces, M&Ms and cherries in a Sea Dogs helmet.” (BD)
5. Today, With our eyes to the sky (and the proper equipment) we will be able to watch Mercury cross in front of the sun. Mercury, which is little larger than Earth’s moon, passes between our planet and the sun about 13 times in a century. The last pass-by was in 2006. Because staring directly into the sun isn’t great for your eyes, NASA says people will have to use a “telescope or high-powered binoculars fitted with solar filters made of specially-coated glass or Mylar,” to safely view the event.
