1. At least 21 people were killed in Tuesday’s terror attack in Nairobi, Kenya. American businessman Jason Spindler was one of the victims. Spindler was a survivor of the World Trade Center attack on 9/11. He attended high school here in Maine at Hebron Academy. (CNN)
2. The football field-sized circle of ice rotating in the Presumpscot River in Westbrook has received national attention from the BBC, ABC’s “Good Morning America” and The New York Times, among others. However it may have spun for the last time. Yesterday the ice was motionless after it got lodged against the river’s edge. (Press Herald)
3. Some Deering and Portland high school parents believe the time has come for the schools to field a combined football team. Citing concerns over declining participation numbers – particularly at the youth level – the parents will get to make their case at a community meeting Thursday evening. Combining the programs would end the traditional Thanksgiving Day game, which has drawn smaller and smaller crowds in recent years. (Press Herald)
4. School administrators at the University of Southern Maine have announced they would like to change the school name to the University of Maine at Portland. The school will have to clear few hurdles to leave the USM moniker behind, including getting the state legislature’s approval. The new logo would include the words, “Gorham, Lewiston and Online”, in a section underneath the new name. (NewsCenterMaine)
5. Netflix announced Tuesday that it’s raising its monthly rates by up to 18 percent. The streaming service’s most popular plan, the Standard tier, will cost $12.99 instead of $10.99, while the Premium and Basic plans will also rise in cost. These rates will apply immediately to new subscribers, while existing subscribers will be phased in “over the next few months.” (Variety)
